A Patchogue man was arrested for boating while intoxicated after Suffolk County Police say officers rescued him from a sinking boat in the Great South Bay.
Police identified the operator as Christopher Carlson, 48, of Patchogue.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Carlson was operating a 2004 30-foot Grady-White in the Great South Bay off Sayville at approximately 9:20 p.m. Tuesday when the boat struck an object in the water. Carlson then called 911 and reported that the vessel was sinking.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers responded and removed Carlson from the boat. Police say he was traveling alone.
Officers subsequently determined that Carlson was allegedly intoxicated.
He was arrested and charged with Operating a Vessel While Intoxicated. Police said he was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
The incident is a reminder that impaired operation laws apply on the water as well as on the road.
A boating trip can turn into an emergency quickly, particularly at night when visibility is reduced and underwater hazards may be difficult to see.
In this case, police say Carlson was able to call for help before the vessel sank, allowing Marine Bureau officers to respond and remove him safely.
A criminal charge is an accusation. Carlson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
