CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The son of a Huntersville town commissioner has been charged with first-degree murder following a deadly shooting in Charlotte’s University City area.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says Evin Quarles, 21, was identified as a suspect in connection with one of two people found fatally shot early Sunday, September 13.
Officers were called shortly after 3 a.m. to the 9300 block of Kittansett Drive for an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon call. CMPD says officers found one victim suffering from gunshot wounds nearby and located a second gunshot victim farther down the street.
MEDIC pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
As detectives continued their investigation, CMPD identified Quarles as a suspect in connection with the first victim and obtained a warrant charging him with first-degree murder.
Police say Quarles later surrendered at the CMPD Law Enforcement Center and was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office without incident.
CMPD described the first victim as a juvenile and said the victim’s family had been notified.
Quarles is the son of Huntersville Town Commissioner Edwin Quarles. Commissioner Quarles subsequently publicly confirmed the relationship, saying, “Evin is my son,” while maintaining that the criminal case is his son’s personal matter.
CMPD says the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detective Wallace is leading the investigation involving the first victim under CMPD report number 20260913-0315-00.
Quarles has been charged, not convicted. The allegations against him will ultimately have to be proven in court.
A separate investigation is continuing into the second person killed that morning, identified by CMPD as 22-year-old Jacori Mitchell. CMPD’s public release does not accuse Quarles of Mitchell’s death.
