CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Republican Stacie McGinn is again seeking North Carolina’s Senate District 42 seat, returning after one of the closest legislative contests of the 2024 election.
McGinn is challenging Democratic Sen. Woodson Bradley, who is serving her first term representing the Mecklenburg County district.
McGinn is campaigning on a résumé that includes more than 30 years as an attorney and business executive. Her campaign says that experience prepared her to approach state government with a focus on problem-solving and accountability.
Her stated priorities include lowering costs, supporting law enforcement, improving student proficiency in reading and math, strengthening parental involvement in education and maintaining a business climate that encourages jobs and investment.
Public safety has also become a prominent part of McGinn’s campaign. She has criticized Bradley over her legislative record, including Bradley’s absence from the final Senate vote on legislation known as “Iryna’s Law.” Those criticisms are campaign arguments and should be considered in that context.
The race is a rematch of 2024, when the candidates were separated by just 209 votes according to McGinn’s campaign and its subsequent election challenge.
That narrow result means both candidates return to voters with established records: Bradley with a term in the General Assembly and McGinn with a previous campaign and a professional background she says would bring a different approach to Raleigh.
District 42 voters will decide between them in November.
