WASHINGTON – Congressional spending records are putting a spotlight on taxpayer-funded expenses associated with North Carolina Congressman Don Davis.
House spending disclosures for the second quarter of 2023 show $27,300 categorized as habitation expenses and $13,030 for office supplies and furniture connected to Davis’s congressional operation.
Combined, that’s $40,330 in one quarter.
The expenses came during Davis’s first year representing North Carolina’s First Congressional District.
The office expenses aren’t the only costs drawing attention.
Separate congressional spending disclosures have been cited for $2,315.54 in taxi and ride-share expenses on January 5, 2024, when Davis traveled to the southern border in Texas.
Records cited regarding that trip also show $6,717.48 in airfare and $850.67 in lodging and meals around the trip — approximately $9,884 combined across those categories.
The House requires those expenditures to be connected to official and representational duties.
So the issue isn’t whether congressional offices are allowed to spend taxpayer money.
It’s whether the amounts were reasonable and whether taxpayers received appropriate value.
With Davis seeking another term representing eastern North Carolina, his public spending record gives voters another part of his congressional record to examine.
