BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. — Saturday night became more than a wrestling match for the Bellport community.
As Cam Howard competed live in Oklahoma at FloWrestling’s Who’s Number One, family, friends and supporters gathered at Painters’ Restaurant in Brookhaven to watch one of their own compete on a national stage.
Howard faced No. 1-ranked Melvin Miller in the 165-pound main event and came up short, losing by a 10-3 decision. But back home, the final score was not what defined the night.
The crowd at Painters’ came together to support Howard from start to finish, turning the watch party into a show of hometown pride.
After the match, Howard’s mother, Marilyn, summed up what the night meant to the family.
She wrote on Facebook that she was “beyond speechless” and that it was “amazing to live in a town that supports us win or lose.”
That message became the heart of the evening.
For Bellport, the night was not about whether Howard won or lost. It was about seeing a local athlete reach one of the biggest stages in high school wrestling — and seeing a community show up behind him.
That kind of support is what hometown sports are all about.
