NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New York Yankees’ season is over after the Tampa Bay Rays completed a three-game sweep in the American League Division Series, defeating New York 4-3 in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

Tampa Bay broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when Victor Mesa Jr. hit a two-run home run, giving the Rays a lead they would not surrender. Ryan Vilade also homered for Tampa Bay.

The Yankees pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth, but a potential game-tying Anthony Volpe home run was overturned following a fan-interference review and ruled a double instead. New York never scored again.

The sweep sends Tampa Bay to the American League Championship Series and ends another postseason run for the Yankees. MLB notes it was only the second time in franchise history that New York has been swept in a best-of-five postseason series.

The Rays will host Game 1 of the ALCS on Monday against the winner of the Guardians-White Sox series.
