SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. — Congressman Nick LaLota is seeking reelection to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District, emphasizing his military background, experience in local government and congressional record on taxes, public safety and constituent services.
A lifelong Long Islander and graduate of the United States Naval Academy, LaLota served as a Navy officer before returning home and entering public service. His career includes positions as an Amityville Village trustee, Suffolk County elections commissioner and chief of staff to the Suffolk County Legislature.
First elected to Congress in 2022, LaLota has made affordability a central issue, particularly the federal deduction for state and local taxes, commonly known as SALT. He advocated for increasing the deduction limit from $10,000 to $40,000, a change enacted in 2025 that provides additional potential tax relief for qualifying homeowners who itemize deductions.
LaLota has also emphasized securing federal resources for Suffolk County. In January 2026, his office announced approximately $11.8 million in federal funding for ten local projects, including investments in clean water infrastructure, environmental protection and law enforcement equipment.
Constituent services have become another part of his congressional record. In June, LaLota announced that his office had helped Suffolk County residents recover more than $15.6 million through federal agency casework involving veterans’ benefits, Social Security payments, overdue tax refunds and other matters. The figure was reported by his congressional office.
As a Navy veteran, LaLota has also focused on veterans’ healthcare, military readiness and assistance for service members and their families.
His reelection campaign highlights border security, affordability, public safety and protecting Long Island’s environment. Those priorities, along with his legislative votes and federal funding record, are among the issues voters can examine as they consider the candidates for the district.
LaLota is running as a Republican incumbent in the 2026 election, according to Federal Election Commission records.
